Chinese researchers make Arctic-to-Antarctic call using rival to Musk’s Starlink

Chinese researchers reported a near-real-time video call linking three expedition vessels operating in the Arctic with Qinling Station in Antarctica through China’s Guowang low-Earth-orbit satellite constellation. The late-September 2026 demonstration reportedly maintained latency below one second and marked the first publicly described long-distance operational demonstration of Guowang since constellation launches began in December 2024. Guowang had roughly 180 satellites in orbit at the time, far fewer than SpaceX’s mature Starlink network, but China is continuing rapid constellation deployment. The event demonstrated global communications potential and did not itself constitute a military deployment or prove dedicated military service capability.
