Ohio steelmaker gets $995M deal for artillery shell steel

The Defense Logistics Agency has awarded Ohio-based Metallus a sole-source, firm-fixed-price contract worth up to $995 million for HF-1 steel used in 155 mm artillery shells. The five-year agreement runs through September 24, 2031, has no option periods and will draw on fiscal 2025-2029 funding as orders are placed. HF-1 forms the fragmenting bodies of M795 high-explosive and M1128 extended-range projectiles, and Metallus has supplied the alloy since 1993. The Army has also funded capacity expansion at Canton aimed at producing enough steel for more than 120,000 shell bodies monthly.
