Special Report: Chinese study proposes future combat vehicle architecture

A Chinese research study examined the future power-generation, energy-storage and energy-management requirements of next-generation electrically powered armoured vehicles. Its long-term concept includes a post-2045 vehicle architecture that could use a modular nuclear reactor to support very high electrical loads, including a proposed 50 MJ electromagnetic railgun. The study focuses on matching future weapon and subsystem energy demands with constraints such as vehicle weight, volume, protection and mobility. It does not indicate that China has approved or begun developing a nuclear-powered combat vehicle; the work is a conceptual research framework rather than a confirmed procurement program.
