What Will Indonesia Do With Its New Aircraft Carrier?
Indonesia's acquisition of the former Italian carrier Giuseppe Garibaldi gives its navy a large aviation-capable ship, but the vessel is more immediately suited to amphibious support, disaster relief and uncrewed-aircraft operations than conventional carrier aviation. Indonesia currently lacks a vertical-takeoff fighter force, and substantial modernization, training, maintenance and escort resources will be needed before the ship can deliver sustained combat power. The most credible near-term model resembles Türkiye's drone-focused TCG Anadolu, provided Jakarta funds the supporting systems required to avoid an expensive but rarely deployable flagship.
