UK Deploys A400M Atlas transport aircraft to Poland to Test Grass Runways for NATO Wartime Airlift
A Royal Air Force A400M Atlas deployed to Poland to evaluate operations from a grass runway during NATO training. The activity tested whether the airlifter can deliver personnel and cargo from an austere surface when established bases are damaged, threatened or unavailable. A400M’s rough-field landing gear, high-mounted engines and tactical performance are designed for dispersed logistics, but local soil strength, weather and repeated sorties still constrain usable capacity. The trial supports alliance work on resilient wartime airlift and agile basing rather than creating a permanent operating location in Poland.
