Debrief: DARPA’s 10-Km Passive-Ranging Goal Remains Elusive
DARPA's Computational Imaging Detection and Ranging challenge ended without a final-round prize because no team met the combined accuracy and low-latency threshold for passive ranging out to 10 kilometers. Competitors used computational imaging, machine learning and artificial intelligence to extract distance information from imagery without emitting signals that could expose an observer. Final submissions were evaluated against targets between 2.5 and 10 kilometers, with potential awards of $1 million, $600,000 and $400,000. Zetascope came closest to the required metrics, while earlier stages had awarded five initial $200,000 prizes and five $50,000 semifinal prizes.
