How could Rheinmetall’s GMF 140 fit with ongoing programmes in North America?
Rheinmetall’s GMF 140 is a proposed 140-metre, roughly 6,000-tonne guided-missile frigate aimed initially at an unspecified North American competition. The design combines Aegis-compatible combat systems and U.S.-sourced radar options with 64 strike-length vertical-launch cells, a five-inch gun, anti-ship missiles and hull-mounted and towed sonars. A 30-knot target speed, core crew of about 90 and open architecture are intended to balance missile capacity, interoperability and operating cost. No navy has selected the ship, and its affordability, construction plan and integration risk remain untested against active regional programmes.
