U.S. Army SGT Stout and Germany’s Boxer Skyranger 30 Show Two Paths to Mobile Counter-Drone Defense
The US Army’s SGT Stout and Germany’s Boxer Skyranger 30 combine mobile sensors, guns and missiles for short-range air defense, with different weapon and integration choices. SGT Stout uses a Stryker A1 chassis carrying a 30 mm XM914 cannon, machine gun, Stinger missiles and Hellfire missiles linked to the Army’s air-defense command network. Skyranger 30 mounts Rheinmetall’s 30 mm cannon with programmable AHEAD ammunition, radar and electro-optical tracking on Boxer, with missile integration extending engagement options. The US system has been fielded since 2021, while Germany’s programme includes one verification vehicle and eighteen series vehicles under its 2024 contract.
