US clears way for $24.3 billion military aircraft sale to Saudi Arabia
The US State Department approved a possible $24.3 billion Foreign Military Sale to Saudi Arabia covering 48 F-35A fighters, 49 Pratt & Whitney engines, and associated equipment and support. Congressional review is still required, and the notification does not constitute a finalized contract or delivery schedule. If completed, the transaction would make Saudi Arabia the second Middle Eastern operator of the stealth fighter after Israel. The proposal will receive close scrutiny over technology protection, regional military balance, human-rights concerns, and Washington's statutory commitment to Israel's qualitative military edge.
