General Atomics pitches Wildfire for U.S. Air Force MQ-9A alternative, with 8,000-nautical-mile range and capacity for two LRASM missiles

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems unveiled Wildfire as a lower-cost uncrewed alternative for the US Air Force’s Massed Modular Aircraft competition, positioning it against the MQ-9A. The company says the aircraft can ferry more than 8,000 nautical miles and carry either two LRASMs or four Joint Strike Missiles. Its modular design is intended to accept weapons, sensors, launched effects, and cargo while supporting autonomous, collaborative operations informed by the FQ-42A program. GA-ASI says existing factories and suppliers could support high-volume production well before the Air Force’s fiscal 2031 target, but no selection or order has been announced.

GA-ASI Reveals First Wildfire UAS Renderings

General Atomics Aeronautical Systems released the first renderings of Wildfire, a proposed modular combat uncrewed aircraft positioned as a lower-cost complement or successor to larger remotely piloted systems. The concept emphasizes range, payload flexibility and massed employment, with imagery showing configurations able to carry substantial precision weapons for maritime or land-strike missions. Renderings establish the intended design direction rather than a completed prototype, contract or flight program, and important characteristics such as propulsion, autonomy, survivability, unit cost and development schedule will have to be demonstrated before any operational assessment is possible.

First Look At General Atomics’ Wildfire, Its Successor To The MQ-9 Reaper (Updated)

General Atomics revealed Wildfire, a clean-sheet unmanned aircraft proposed as a more affordable successor to the MQ-9 Reaper for intelligence and strike missions. The design is being developed for the Defense Innovation Unit's Massed Modular Aircraft effort, emphasizing modular payloads, rapid manufacture and operation in contested environments. Images show a long-endurance, pusher-propeller configuration, but the company has not released a complete performance specification. Wildfire remains a development candidate rather than an adopted program, and projected price, production rate and operational claims require validation through the DIU evaluation and flight-test process.
