Italy puts $5.9 billion toward a new main battle tank

Italy has allocated about $5.9 billion to its new main battle tank programme, intended to replace the Army's Ariete fleet. The effort is being led by Leonardo Rheinmetall Military Vehicles, the 50:50 joint venture formed by Leonardo and Rheinmetall, under the NMBT programme. Earlier planning envisaged roughly 132 tanks, with programme completion targeted for 2038.
