Lockheed Martin has announced that the first F-35A destined for the Royal Canadian Air Force has completed its maiden flight, marking a key milestone in Canada's Future Fighter Capability Project to replace its legacy CF-18 Hornets. The flight confirms that production of the Canadian aircraft is on track following years of evaluation, political debate and procurement negotiations. Canada is acquiring 88 F-35As under the programme, which will modernize RCAF strike and intercept capability for NORAD and NATO commitments.
