$4B in Army counterdrone contracts as drone marketplace

The U.S. Army awarded ten counter-drone indefinite-delivery contracts with a combined ceiling of about $4.15 billion, using the Pentagon's new marketplace to speed purchases of command systems, sensors and defeat technologies. Seven vendors received ceilings of $500 million, two received $250 million and Smart Shooter received $150 million, while roughly $50 million was obligated at award. The structure lets units place follow-on orders against qualified offerings more quickly, but actual spending and production volumes will depend on future task orders rather than the headline ceiling.

Cape Canaveral is building up its counter-drone defenses, Space Force says

Cape Canaveral Space Force Station is scheduled to receive additional defenses against small drones within weeks through Joint Interagency Task Force 401. The specific sensors and interceptors were not identified, but the effort addresses a gap because traditional air-surveillance radars are optimized for aircraft rather than quadcopters and similar low-altitude threats. Protection is increasingly important as the installation supports a record launch tempo, including 109 launches in the preceding year. The deployment is a defensive upgrade for critical launch infrastructure, not evidence of a confirmed attack, and officials have not disclosed its cost or permanent force structure.

Lithuania closes Vilnius airport, NATO summons jets in response to possible drone

Lithuania temporarily closed Vilnius airport and NATO scrambled at least one fighter after radar returns were initially assessed as a possible drone incursion on September 13. A jet launched from Šiauliai, where the Italian Air Force supports NATO’s Baltic air mission, visually identified the objects as a flock of birds. Authorities lifted the alert and reopened the airport within 38 minutes, explaining that birds and drones can produce similar radar signatures. The false alarm caused a brief aviation disruption but did not interrupt the Vilnius marathon or reveal an actual airspace violation.

Counter-drone system to protect British bases

Britain’s Ministry of Defence plans to spend £240 million on Project PRESAGIUM, an enhanced counter-drone capability for protecting fixed military infrastructure. The system is intended to detect and defeat evolving unmanned-aircraft threats at British bases, but the ministry has not identified suppliers, technical specifications, deployment locations, or an entry-into-service date. The investment is separate from £470 million allocated to wider security improvements across the defence estate. Together, the measures respond to growing concern about hostile reconnaissance and attacks by inexpensive drones while leaving the precise mix of sensors and effectors undisclosed.

U.S. Army tests robotic machine gun against drones

Allen Control Systems demonstrated its autonomous Bullfrog counter-drone weapon during Falcon Peak 26.2 at the Cibola Range within Yuma Proving Ground on September 9. Mounted on a pickup truck, the robotic turret used computer vision and automated fire control to detect, track, and engage drone targets with a standard M240 machine gun. The exercise was led by NORAD and US Northern Command to examine affordable, low-collateral responses to small unmanned aircraft. Bullfrog has already been fielded by the Army and Navy, while the company reported a 100% engagement rate at the 2026 Technology Readiness Experimentation event.

Rostec pitches quad-machine gun mount as affordable counter-UAV system

Rostec presented a counter-UAS system built around remotely controlled mounts, each carrying four 7.62 mm PKT machine guns. Electro-optical television and thermal channels, automatic tracking and a laser rangefinder support engagement, while a command post can control up to four mounts by cable or a wireless link reaching about 500 metres. The associated radar is claimed to detect a 0.1-square-metre target at 3.5 kilometres and a 0.03-square-metre target at 800 metres. The concept seeks a lower cost per engagement than missiles, but independent effectiveness and procurement status were not reported.

U.S. Marines’ new drone killer gets confirmation from V2X

V2X confirmed a $19 million US Marine Corps contract for Tempest counter-drone vehicles, including delivery, maintenance, software and training. A related Pentagon notice valued the work at about $19.06 million for 10 vehicles through August 10, 2027, although V2X described its award as an indefinite-delivery, indefinite-quantity contract and did not confirm that both notices cover exactly the same scope. Tempest uses a modified Can-Am Maverick X3 with sensors and two AGM-114L Longbow Hellfire launchers to engage Class 2 and Class 3 uncrewed aircraft.

U.S. Navy selects L3Harris VAMPIRE counter-drone weapons to strengthen littoral defences against unmanned attacks at sea

The United States Navy selected L3Harris to supply VAMPIRE counter-drone systems for littoral defense against uncrewed aircraft and other low-cost aerial threats. VAMPIRE is a modular, vehicle- or platform-mounted system that combines electro-optical sensing with launchers for laser-guided rockets. Its adaptable architecture allows deployment without a purpose-built air-defense vehicle, an advantage for dispersed coastal and maritime units. The selection extends a system already used in land-based counter-drone missions into the Navy’s near-shore operating environment, although quantities, contract value and delivery timing were not publicly disclosed.

U.S. Air Force to buy 60 DroneBuster counter-drone systems

Pacific Air Forces issued a solicitation seeking 60 DroneBuster 5 handheld counter-drone systems with an add-on focused on disrupting satellite-navigation links. The compact electronic-warfare device is intended to give deployed personnel a portable option for detecting or defeating small uncrewed aircraft around bases. Responses were due September 11, but the notice stated that funding had not yet been made available. The requirement should therefore be treated as a prospective purchase rather than a completed acquisition, with quantity, schedule and award dependent on appropriations and contracting decisions.

U.S. Air Force Seeks Medium Caliber Air Defense Guns to Protect Bases From Drones and Missiles

The US Air Force has issued a sources-sought notice for a mobile medium-calibre gun system to defend bases against subsonic cruise missiles and Group 1 through Group 5 drones. Desired attributes include modular deployment, deep magazines, integrated sensors, interoperability and a lower engagement cost that preserves scarce missile interceptors. Industry responses are due October 9 and will inform assessments of range, altitude, probability of kill, mobility and ammunition economics. The notice is a market survey rather than a formal solicitation, and it establishes neither a preferred calibre nor a funded acquisition programme.
